As a manager, I often wonder what my staff really think of me.
In such a position, you do your best—and hope for the best. By "do your best" I don't just mean that you do the best job you can. I mean that you do your best to build trust with your team. If you do that, the rest will fall into place.
This morning, I got a note from a long-time friend and former Decadian. She worked in the Development department long before truth, trust, and transparency was the norm.
She had this to say about her current employer...
"I like what I'm doing, but I have the boss from hell. He is moody, and a game player—not very truthful and just downright unpleasant and often mean at times.
...the main issue I dislike my job is the not so truthful and conflicting communications regarding my work assignments.
...Reading your blog entries today, I often regret not remaining with Decade."
So...
If there is something dysfunctional in your work environment, take steps to change it. Moving to another job is like buying a used car. You trade your known problems for someone else's hidden problems. You don't really know which pasture is greener until you taste and compare the dirt.
